SkillSelect is the Australian government's online system through which a good part of skilled migration passes. And the EOI — Expression of Interest — is the document with which you enter that system. Understanding what they are (and what they are not) avoids the most common misunderstanding of this entire path.
The essential point: an EOI is not a visa application. It is exactly what its name says — an expression of interest. When you submit one, you describe your profile (your occupation, your experience, your education, your English) and become visible within the system. From there, the process works by invitation: the authorities are the ones who, according to their own criteria and priorities, invite certain profiles to submit a formal visa application.
Two consequences follow that are worth being clear about from day one. First: submitting an EOI does not guarantee an invitation — some profiles receive one quickly, others wait, and others never receive one. Second: an EOI is not a process you “win” with a score you calculate yourself; the criteria are defined by the Department and change over time, so any number you see in forums or groups deserves the same caution as a rumour.
